In 1976, the 23-year-old started rallying in a VW Beetle and soon made a name for himself as a “wild rider” with his co-driver Co Jörg Pattermann in the Opel Kadett. In Germany and Austria, the two soon belonged to the elite, were fast in the Ascona 400 and then Manta 400. With Peter Diekmann Haider shone in a Mercedes 500 SLC from 1982, followed by the Group A era as Opel work team with Ferdinand Hinterleitner in cadet GSI – with the World Cup victory in New Zealand in 1988 and the German championship title in 1989. Until 1999 Haider ( with Stefan Eichhorner) was still successful in Audi and Peugeot.
